Testing the existence of taxable agglomeration rents resorting to tax-setting-market potential estimations has become a fruitful research avenue in the empirical front of foot-loose capital (FC) geographical economics models. This paper applies the FC theoretical framework in an empirical investigation of taxable agglomeration rents for the 483 Spanish local labour markets (LLMs) over the period 2005-2017. Resorting to LLMs, as compared to the papers using municipal data, allows to fulfil with the labor immobility assumption implied by FC models. Moreover, the validity of market potential as a proxy for agglomeration economies is safely safeguarded at this geographical scope of analysis. The results of our estimations find that market potential is a significant determinant of the tax-setting decisions across the Spanish LLMs proving the presence of taxable agglomeration rents.

Our results are robust to a number of controls (different agglomeration measures, alternative neighbourhood criteria, market potential endogeneity and other socio-economic variables affecting tax-setting decisions).
